Arizona State University engineers and doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona to develop a new type of blood glucose self-monitoring sensor that can help patients with diabetes.

And cost many people with diabetes with difficult to manage blood sugar levels.

It is recommended that they monitor the levels of glucose, but the current monitoring devices typically require patients to perform the task from a painful finger prick to draw blood sample for testing, many patients and must do so several times each day.

The new sensor will enable people to withdraw liquid tear from their eyes to get a sample to test the level of glucose.

The researchers said glucose in the tear fluid may give an indication of the levels of sugar in the blood accurately a test using a sample of blood.

"This new technology may encourage patients to make sure their blood sugar often, which could lead to better control diabetes through simple touch of the eye," said Jeffrey T. Abel, the designer of the device technology.
